Who are our volunteer speakers?

Amber Community’s Volunteer Speaker Program brings together people impacted by road trauma and emergency service personnel who are passionate about preventing road trauma and creating safer communities.

Our volunteers include people whose lives have been impacted by road trauma in many different ways, including those who have been seriously injured, lost a loved one, been responsible for causing harm, witnessed a crash, been first on the scene or been affected in other ways, as well as emergency service personnel who have attended road incidents and supported those affected.

While every person’s experience is unique, they share a common motivation: to use their experiences to create understanding, inspire safer choices and help prevent future road trauma.

Many of our volunteer speakers share their personal experiences as part of Road Trauma Awareness Seminars (RTAS), workplace programs, schools and community education initiatives. Through these conversations, they help participants connect with the human impact of road trauma, reflect on the beliefs, attitudes and assumptions that influence road use, and consider the choices they can make to keep themselves and others safe.

Beyond our education programs, many volunteers also contribute across Amber Community through media opportunities, advocacy, fundraising, community events, awareness campaigns and other initiatives that help strengthen our impact across Victoria.

Training and support provided

Every volunteer speaker completes a comprehensive training program before joining Amber Community’s education team. Volunteers are supported to share their stories safely, confidently and purposefully in a way that encourages reflection, conversation and learning, recognising the importance of both their wellbeing and the privilege of sharing experiences that can inspire reflection and positive change.

Throughout their volunteering journey, they receive ongoing mentoring, debriefing, professional development and wellbeing support. As part of a connected statewide volunteer community, they also have opportunities to continue learning, build relationships and support one another.

At the heart of Amber Community

Our volunteer speakers are ambassadors for change and are at the heart of Amber Community.

Through their generosity, courage and commitment, they help connect communities with the real impact of road trauma. Whether speaking in an education program, sharing their story through the media, supporting fundraising activities, advocating for safer roads or volunteering at community events, they bring authenticity, compassion and hope to everything they do.

While road safety knowledge provides an important foundation, it is the stories, experiences and conversations shared by our volunteers that bring learning to life. Their experiences create opportunities for reflection, challenge assumptions, encourage empathy and inspire safer choices.

These conversations help participants explore what often sits behind the choices they make on the road and uncover opportunities for positive change. Every story shared, every event supported and every conversation started contributes to Amber Community’s mission of reducing the incidence and impact of road trauma while helping build a stronger culture of road safety for everyone.
