Celebrating James Thompson: Amber Community’s newest Life Member
Amber Community is proud to recognise James Thompson as our newest Life Member, honouring 12 years of dedicated service and commitment to supporting people affected by road trauma.
James’s story reflects resilience and service. From rebuilding his life after a devastating road incident to serving in the emergency services and sharing his lived experience with others, James has made a lasting impact on our organisation and the wider community.
A life changed in a split second
In 2002, a split-second decision at an intersection changed James’s life forever. As James describes it, a “flick of the wrist” on his motorbike led to a collision with a car completing a turn.
James spent two weeks in a coma on life support. He lost one eye and the use of his left arm. His survival was made possible by the skill, dedication and care of the first responders, paramedics, doctors and nurses who supported him.
While the incident had a profound and lasting impact on his life, it also shaped the way James chose to move forward. Rather than turning away from the experience, he found a way to give back to the people and community who had helped him.
Turning lived experience into service
James joined the Country Fire Authority (CFA), fighting fires and training as a road crash operator. He took on this challenging role as a way of “repaying” those who had helped him after his own incident.
It was a remarkable commitment, particularly given his personal experience of road trauma. James’s decision reflected his instinct to help others and his determination to make a difference.
Several years later, James saw an advertisement seeking speakers for Amber Community. Recognising an opportunity to use his experience to help others, he began sharing his story at our Road Trauma Awareness Seminars (RTAS).
He has continued for the past 12 years, helping audiences understand the real and lasting consequences of road trauma and the importance of making safe choices on our roads.
Sharing his story to make a difference
Through his work with Amber Community, James has helped countless people by speaking openly about his experience. His willingness to share both the immediate consequences of his incident and its ongoing impact gives audiences a powerful insight into the realities of road trauma.
James has also supported our media work and represented Amber Community as a Shine a Light on Road Safety Ambassador, helping raise awareness of road safety and the importance of support for people affected by road trauma.
Whether speaking at seminars, supporting campaigns or lending a hand when needed, James brings generosity, positivity and good humour to everything he does.
His contribution is a powerful example of how lived experience can help others learn, reflect and make safer choices.
A richly deserved Life Membership
Life Membership recognises more than the years someone has given to Amber Community. It celebrates the courage, compassion and lasting impact behind the recognition.
James’s 12 years of dedication reflect the very best of our community. He has turned a life-changing experience into an opportunity to help others by supporting road safety education and helping people better understand the consequences of road trauma.
We are incredibly grateful for everything James has contributed to Amber Community, the emergency services and the wider community.
Congratulations, James, on becoming Amber Community’s newest Life Member. Thank you; your contribution has made a meaningful difference, and we are proud to recognise you with this honour.
