We farewell and celebrate Bernadette Nugent at our 2025 Annual General Meeting, a leader, colleague, and friend who has made an extraordinary impact on Amber Community.

Bernadette began her journey with Amber Community (then Road Trauma Support Services Victoria) on 16 January 2012, as our Manager of Counselling and Support Services.

She brought to the role not only a strong background in social work, but also deep empathy and an unwavering commitment to people. These qualities have shaped not only her work but also the culture and relationships across our organisation.

Stepping into leadership

In January 2019, Bernadette took on the role of Interim CEO, and by 22 April 2019, she was officially appointed CEO. From that moment, she guided Amber Community through some of its most challenging and transformative years.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Bernadette became the steady hand we all needed. With calmness and compassion, she led us through uncertainty, ensuring we stayed connected to one another and to the community we serve.

Guiding transformation and growth

Under Bernadette’s leadership, Amber Community achieved several milestone changes that will continue to shape our future.

  • She led a bold and meaningful rebrand, strengthening our voice and clarifying our identity as Amber Community.

  • She oversaw our move to Mitcham, creating a new and welcoming home that reflects our values and positions us for future growth.

While these achievements stand as major milestones, it is Bernadette’s humanity that has left the most lasting impression.

Leading with heart

Bernadette leads with empathy, integrity, and care. She has built genuine friendships across the organisation, always taking the time to listen, to support, and to encourage others.

Her leadership has been defined not just by outcomes, but by the warmth, respect, and trust she brings to every interaction. She has modelled what it means to live Amber Community’s values every day.

A lasting honour

At our recent Annual General Meeting, it was our privilege to recognise Bernadette’s remarkable contribution by awarding her Honorary Life Membership of Amber Community, a well-deserved honour and lasting acknowledgment of her extraordinary impact.

Bern, you’ve given us more than leadership. You’ve shared your kindness, wisdom, and heart. You’ve strengthened our community and shown us what compassionate leadership truly looks like.

On behalf of everyone at Amber Community, thank you for everything. We will miss you greatly, but the friendships and legacy you’ve built will last far beyond your time as CEO.

Congratulations, Bernadette, on becoming a Life Member, and thank you for being such an unforgettable part of the Amber Community story.
