Amber Community is honoured to announce that Alex Prestney has been named the Ambassador for the 2025 Shine a Light on Road Safety campaign.
A dedicated member of Victoria Police, Alex is deeply committed to road safety advocacy, driven by personal loss and a mission to prevent further tragedies on our roads.
Shine a Light on Road Safety – a campaign for change
Amber Community’s Shine a Light on Road Safety campaign is an annual initiative to raise awareness about road trauma and promote safer driving practices. Join us at Albert Park Lake to Walk & Wheel or Fundraise Your Way in your local community.
Walk & Wheel with Amber Community at Albert Park Lake on Sunday 4 May 2025, the welcome desk opens at 10am, with the walk starting at 11am. You can walk, wheel around on your bicycle, wheelchair or mobility scooter or push a pram.
By shining a light on road safety, we aim to honour those impacted by road trauma and advocate for meaningful change on our roads.
A personal commitment to road safety
Alex’s advocacy stems from a heartbreaking loss. His brother, Josh Prestney, was one of four Victorian police officers—along with Lynette Taylor, Kevin King, and Glen Humphris—who tragically lost their lives on Melbourne’s Eastern Freeway on 22 April 2020 after being struck by a truck during a routine traffic stop. This devastating event profoundly impacted Alex and his family, motivating him to honour Josh’s memory.
Determined to raise awareness and provide support for those affected by road trauma, Alex has embarked on a journey of advocacy, education, and fundraising to make a lasting difference.
Run the Bay for Road Safety – a 200km challenge
As part of his ongoing commitment, Alex Prestney and fellow road safety advocate Chris May will take on the Run the Bay for Road Safety, a 200km run over three days starting on Sunday 27 April 2025. The run, which loops around Port Phillip Bay, symbolises the five-year average of lives lost on Victoria’s roads.
But Alex and Chris aren’t running alone—they need community support! Whether participants choose to run 2km or 20km, everyone is encouraged to get involved in this crucial cause, raising awareness and funds for Amber Community. Find out more here.
Spreading awareness through community engagement
Beyond physical challenges, Alex has been actively engaging with rural and regional communities, sharing powerful messages about road safety and the importance of support for those impacted by road trauma.
“My goal is to help make our roads a safe environment for everyone who uses them and to prevent tragedy from occurring,” Alex said.
His message aligns perfectly with Amber Community’s mission, and we are incredibly grateful for his passion and dedication.
The Road Best Travelled – a podcast for change
In addition to his physical endurance efforts, Alex has launched an inspiring podcast titled ‘The Road Best Travelled’. In episode two, he sat down with Amber Community CEO Bernadette Nugent for a compelling discussion about the organisation’s mission.
This podcast serves as another platform for Alex to amplify the conversation around road safety and trauma recovery. Listen to “The Road Best Travelled” on the following platforms: Spotify, Apple or Amazon.
A legacy of advocacy and action
Alex Prestney’s commitment to road safety advocacy is unwavering. In 2023, he ran an extraordinary 560km from Mildura to Melbourne, raising vital awareness and funds for Amber Community. Now, through his role as campaign ambassador, his efforts continue to inspire individuals and communities to take action for safer roads.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Alex for his tireless work, commitment, and leadership in promoting road safety and supporting those affected by road trauma. His dedication is making a real difference, and we are proud to have him as the ambassador of the 2025 Shine a Light on Road Safety campaign.
