We are proud to recognise long-time volunteer, Shane, as an Honorary Life Member of Amber Community.

Finding support

Shane first came to Amber Community, then known as Road Trauma Support Services Victoria, in 2011 after being involved in a crash. At the time, he didn’t know where to turn for help, but a friend at VicRoads suggested reaching out to us.

Through counselling, Shane found a safe space to process what had happened and to begin coping with the overwhelming emotions he was experiencing. He has often shared how much that support meant to him and remains deeply grateful to this day.

Volunteering

In October 2012, Shane joined one of our driver groups run by the counselling team. Two years later, in 2014, he attended a Road Trauma Awareness Seminar facilitated by Gillian, who remains part of our team.

During that seminar, Shane listened to a volunteer share their story and witnessed the powerful impact it had on participants. That experience stayed with him, inspiring a strong desire to give back by becoming a volunteer himself. His goal was to encourage others to make safer choices on the road and to help prevent more families from experiencing road trauma.

Making a lasting impact

Over the years, many of us at Amber Community have had the privilege of working alongside Shane. He has generously shared his story across Road Trauma Awareness Seminars, media interviews, and countless community events.

Gillian has often spoken of how rewarding it has been to witness Shane’s journey from that first meeting, how much he has grown in confidence, strength, and compassion.

It takes remarkable courage to stand before others and speak about such a deeply personal experience. Shane has done this with honesty, grace, and authenticity. Through his storytelling, he has made a profound impact — connecting with people, raising awareness, and inspiring safer behaviour on our roads. His message is a powerful reminder that a single decision can have life-changing consequences.

A well deserved honour

Shane has said that he wouldn’t be here today without Amber Community. But in truth, we are the ones who are grateful for his courage, his generosity, and the hundreds of hours he has dedicated to preventing further road trauma.

It is our absolute honour to recognise Shane as an Honorary Life Member of Amber Community. His contribution has left an enduring mark on our organisation and the broader community.
