Welcoming Richard as an Honorary Life Member
Richard’s journey with Amber Community began with a distinguished career in Victoria Police, where he witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of road trauma. Joining in 1981, Richard was quickly immersed in the intense reality of road safety. Within his first year, he had already attended three fatal crashes, beginning a career that would bring him face-to-face with countless tragedies. Yet it wasn’t until more than 25 years later that he discovered the role Amber Community—then known as Road Trauma Support Services Victoria—played in supporting those affected by road trauma.
Time for Remembering
In 2006, as the Inspector in Charge of the Major Collision Investigation Group, Richard represented Victoria Police at the Time for Remembering ceremony at Parliament House. This event, which he attended for several years, deepened his awareness of Amber Community’s mission. A year later, following the tragic 2007 truck and train crash at Kerang that claimed 11 lives, Richard developed a deeper appreciation for Amber Community. Observing the gap in holistic support for those impacted by road trauma, he noted that Amber Community was the only organisation assisting all affected individuals, regardless of the specific circumstances. This understanding brought him into closer and more frequent contact with the organisation.
Sharing knowledge
In 2008, our Education Services Manager, Chris Harrison, invited Richard to present to our facilitators as part of their professional development. Over the next few years, he led several presentations at Box Hill, Queenscliff, and Monbulk. In 2010, his collaboration with Amber Community led to the development of the “After the Crash” cards, an essential resource used by police and emergency service workers to offer support after road trauma incidents.
A dedicated volunteer, board member, and research advocate
In 2012, Richard joined Amber Community’s Research and Evaluation Subcommittee, contributing his expertise to help refine and enhance our programs. Two years later, he was appointed to the Board, where he served as a director and secretary for nine years, and he continues to offer his expertise to the Research and Evaluation Working Group.
