Support from the Transport Accident Commission (TAC)
If you have been injured in a transport incident in Victoria, you can make a TAC claim to help pay for the treatment and support you need, even if the accident was your fault.
Who is the TAC?
The TAC is a no-fault insurance scheme owned by the Victorian Government. This means if you are injured in a transport incident in Victoria, you can make a TAC claim to help pay for the treatment and support you need, even if the incident was your fault.
When Victorian motorists pay their vehicle registration, they also pay an insurance premium called a ‘TAC charge’. We use this money to support people injured in transport accidents.
If we accept your claim, we can help pay for medical and like expenses related to your accident injuries.
Who can make a claim?
You can make a TAC claim if all of the following apply:
- You were involved in an incident caused by a moving vehicle, such as a car, motorcycle, bus, train or tram.
- You were injured in the incident.
- The incident happened in Victoria or interstate involving a Victorian registered vehicle.
How to make a TAC claim
There are three ways you can make a TAC claim:
- Online at vic.gov.au/claim
- Call the TAC on 1300 654 329
- If you went to hospital because of your incident, some hospitals can make a TAC claim on your behalf. Speak to a hospital Patient Liaison Officer to learn more.
Note: You do not need legal representation to make a claim or receive support from the TAC.
What support can I get?
The type and amount of support you receive from the TAC, and the length of time you need support, will depend on your circumstances.
Support can include:
- medical treatment for your accident injuries
- support services to help you while you recover
- income support if you’re unable to work because of your accident injuries
- return to work support for you and your employer
- lump-sum payments if you have a serious and permanent injury.
